Why Washi?
There are many reasons that make Washi such an amazing material to work with!
- Its STRENGTH! The fibres themselves are strong, and then they are left long, pounded and stretched further so that they tangle. Washi can be sewn, it was even used as armor and clothing in earlier times, as well as for furniture.- Since the fibres position themselves at random, there is no real grain to washi. This gives the paper a resistance to creasing, wrinkling and tearing, and means it can be used more like cloth.
- Washi weighs much less than other papers of equal thickness.
- It is literally warmer to the touch than ordinary wood pulp paper!
- As it is so absorbent, washi has much denser and vibrant colours.
- Woodblocks, stencils and silkscreen are used to create a truly amazing range of motif designs.
